Dr. Samuel Hazo will share his recollections about Pittsburgh and speaks about his book – The Pittsburgh That Stays Within You. He describes the book by explaining, “The Pittsburgh that Stays Within You is more a personal recollection than a history or a travel guide. It is a gathering of times and incidents of what Pittsburgh meant to me over a lifetime. Others might find that my recollections match theirs. I will present these as a kind of mosaic—not necessarily in historical order—and interweave poems that I wrote at those times.” The program will conclude with a short film.
Dr. Samuel Hazo is the author of books of poetry, fiction, essays and plays Dr. Hazo was the founder and director of the International Poetry Forum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Poetic Moments: Samuel Hazo presents asides from the International Poetry Forum (1966-2009) was the featured story on The Next Page in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, February 15, 2015. He is also McAnulty Distinguished Professor of English Emeritus at Duquesne University where he taught for forty-three years. He was honored with the Griffin Award for Creative Writing from the University of Notre Dame, his alma mater, and was chosen to receive an honorary doctorate from Notre Dame University in 2008. He has been awarded twelve honorary doctorates. Samuel Hazo is a National Book Award Finalist and he was named Pennsylvania’s first State Poet by Governor Robert Casey in 1993, and he served until 2003.
