PETERS TOWNSHIP PUBLIC LIBRARY YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL
The mission of the Youth Advisory Council is to provide recommendations for the development and
continuation of the Young Adult Department, based upon the interests of teenaged library patrons. All teens
interested in participating in the Council are welcomed; contact the library for meeting dates and times.
SPECIAL EVENTS

"THE GALLERY" SHOWCASES STUDENT PHOTOS
May 1 - 15, 2008
The Peters Township High School Photography Classes will exhibit their work in the main lobby
of the Peters Township Public Library from May 1st – 15th (takedown on the 15th around 3:00 p.m.) during library hours. "The Gallery" is a
display of hundreds of student photographs from the classes and club at the high school. An opening
reception will be held on May 1st from 6:30-8 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
Some of the photos displayed will be available for sale, with proceeds to benefit the Library's
expansion project. Over 50 students contributed work for this exciting event. For more information

GENERAL PROGRAMS
ENGLISH-CHINESE FOR YOUNG ADULTS AND ADULTS
Duration: 15 weeks, January 27 - May 11, 2008 (Please note: no class on March 23, 2008)
When: Sundays, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $95.00 (includes a $20.00 registration fee)
This class is for those interested in learning basic Chinese characters and spoken Chinese. No tests or homework

GET GRAPHIC BOOK CLUB
Ages: Grades 9 - 12
When: April 24, May 22, June 26, 2008
Day/Time: Fourth Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Are you a graphic novel and comic fiend, like me? Have you read a few, but still don't know how you feel about this format?
Don't know what the fuss is all about? Whatever your answer, join me for "Get Graphic," a new book club. We'll read classic,
groundbreaking, alternative, and mainstream graphic novels. We can all read the same title or you can pick one of your
choosing and then share your reaction to it with the group. The choice is yours, and remember with great power comes great

INTRODUCTION TO BUDDHISM
Duration: 4 weeks, April 26 - May 17, 2008
When: Saturdays, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Limit: 12 students
Instructor: Bob Rickman
In these four sessions, students will be introduced to the ideas of Buddhism and its practice. We will examine
the different types, and then use Tibetan Buddhism as our focus. There will be a short meditation on each lesson. Basic topics
will include: Buddha's Life Story, Anayltical and Concentrated Meditation, Anger vs. Patience, Attachment vs. Love, and Karma. These
teachings will be based on Gelek Rimpoche's "Gateway to the Spiritual Path" and "Good Life, Good Death." Register at the library's

TEEN MOVIE LOUNGE
Ages: Grades 7 - 12
When: Thursdays, May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, 2008
Time: 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Join us every week to watch a movie, have a snack and chill out after school!
We’ll watch popular movies, movies based on books, and documentaries like Planet Earth.
It will be almost like you're at the movie theater, with our surround sound system and large projection
wall! Suggestions are always welcome! Please register at the circulation desk; also, please note:

GAME ON! OPEN GAMING SESSIONS
When: Wednesdays, May 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2008

Tweens (6th - 8th graders) 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Teens (9th - 12th graders) 6:00 - 8:30 p.m.
Youth patrons are welcome to use the Xboxes and Nintendo Wii to play the games of their choice during these sessions. Just

BOOKS & BITES BOOK CLUB
Ages: Grades 9 - 12
When: May 6, June 3, 2008
Day/Time: First Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Are you tired of books with happy families, perfect couples, and happily ever after? There is nothing wrong with
these characterizations. Many of you probably have some of these things in your own lives. However, nothing goes right all
the time and that is why a book can be more powerful when the perfect things are mixed in with problems. Join this
discussion and share snacks as we explore current young adult literature. Title and snack recommendations are

BREAKING DAWN: THE FIRST CHAPTER PARTY
Ages: Grades 7 - 12
When: Saturday, May 31, 2008

Come celebrate the release of Stephenie Meyer’s special edition of Eclipse. This edition will
have the first chapter of Breaking Dawn, the final book in the Twilight series, printed in it.
Join us as we read aloud this first, and long awaited, chapter, eat Twilight-inspired snacks,

RED CROSS BABYSITTING CLASS
Ages: 11 and up
When:
Saturday, June 7, 2008, 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and
Sunday, June 8, 2008, 1:00 - 4:30 p.m.
OR
Saturday, July 19, 2008, 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and
Sunday, July 20, 2008, 1:00 - 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $50.00 (includes $15.00 for handbook)
Limit: Minimum 8, maximum 16 students
Instructor: Caron Boyer
The Red Cross Babysitting Course teaches students about child development and how to care for
children of all ages. This course prepares future babysitters for all kinds of situations from
changing diapers to how to handle an emergency. CPR is not included. A $15.00 student handbook is
included in the fee for the class. Participants are required to bring a copy of their birth
certificate to the first class and must be 11 by June 7, 2008 for first session, or July 26, 2008 for
second session. Students must attend both days and pass the training to receive their official Red
Cross Certificate. Students should also bring a brown bag lunch for Saturday. Register at the
library's circulation desk; fee must be paid at time of registration.
SIGHTSEEING ON THE INTERNET
Ages: 13 and up

Gas prices got you down? Join us in the new Teen Room at the library for armchair travel as we visit popular U.S.
cities over the Internet. Each person attending can request a visit to one or two cities, which we will then tour over the Internet, with our results magnified and projected on the back wall of the Teen Room. There will
be views of famous sightseeing spots and landmarks, as well as common street scenes. Participants will
learn how to use the amazing resources of "Google" to visit their favorite U.S. cities from many points
of view! Don't miss this adventure! Register at the library's circulation desk.
COMEDY IMPROVISATION CLASS
Ages: 12 - 17
Duration: 2 weeks, August 4 - 15, 2008
When: Monday - Friday, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $90.00
In the style of "Whose Line is it Anyway?" and other similar improvisation shows, students will first
become familiar with the basic fundamentals of improvisation and come to understand their roots in acting
training. They will then learn performance exercises used by the pros. Class will conclude with a
one-hour staged improv presentation including advanced games and sketches written by the students. For serious

CHINESE LANGAUGE LESSONS
Ages: 12 and up
Duration: 1 week, August 11 - 15, 2008
When: Monday - Friday, 12:40 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

This program is designed for those who are interested in Chinese culture and/or are planning to visit China. Topics
covered will be practical conversation, useful vocabulary, Pinyin, songs, and movies. Beginners are welcome! Register

GIRL'S NIGHT OUT
Ages: Girls in grades 4th - 8th and their moms
When: 1st Monday of the month

This after-school group meets once a month -- just us girls! Enjoy reading
together, watching chick flicks, and sharing in this special mother-daughter book club! Register in the Children's

MIDDLE SCHOOL BOOK CLUB
Ages: Grades 6 - 8 (or ages 11 - 15)

Calling all middle schoolers! Join us at the library for a bi-monthly book club just for you!
Our first book will be "A Year Down Yonder," by Richard Peck. Come to our first meeting on

FANS OF FANTASY BOOK CLUB

Now that the last book has come out ... what do we read next? Fans of Harry Potter get together for a
fun-filled night of games, snacks, and fantasy! Join us as we meet once a month to talk about the new books we've
read and what we'll read next. Each program will feature a craft, snacks and games. Register in the Children's Department.

TEEN ONLINE BOOK CLUB
Our Teen Online Book Club features mysteries, comedies, true-life adventures and even some
science-fiction. Every day a new five minute read; every week a new book. Reading was
