"THE GALLERY" SHOWCASES STUDENT PHOTOS

The Peters Township High School Photography Classes will exhibit their work in the main lobby
of the Peters Township Public Library from February 25 - March 10, 2010 during library hours. "The Gallery" is a
display of hundreds of student photographs from the classes and club at the high school. An opening
reception will be held on February 25 from 6:30-8 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
Over 80 students contributed work for this exciting event. The Photography Club officers are
Amber Doerr, Samantha Norris, Kaitlin Richert, Britany Grezjka, Shannon Gallaway and Jessica Kleja.

STEP BACK IN TIME -- A CELEBRATION OF LIFE IN PETERS TOWNSHIP

Are you passionate about writing and looking for someone to critique your work? If you would like to give and receive inspiration, motivation, and encouragement in a
group atmosphere, the Peters Township Public Library is offering a new Adult Writing Workshop on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-9:00 p.m. beginning on November 3, 2009. Facilitating
the writing workshop will be author Linda Foltz, whose accomplishments include a published book and articles that have appeared in various magazines, including Seventeen,
Teen Voices, and Family Resources Magazine. She has also been featured on local and national radio and television, including The Montel Williams Show. Linda believes her writing success is due
largely to the ongoing support of members of her first writing group – eventually all of its members were professionally published. Linda is currently working on her second
full-length manuscript.

Wii SPORTS FOR SENIORS

Seniors, do you love to golf, but don't want to deal with the weather? Maybe you were a bowler, but your arthritis

We'll use the large plasma TV and Nintendo Wii in the new Teen Reading Room to stay fit. Join us and learn to play Wii Sports!
Peters Township teens will walk you through the use of the Wii-mote, a light-weight, motion-detecting controller that you swing
like a golf club, baseball bat, bowling ball or tennis racquet. The benefit of Wii Sports is evident and being used in many
senior living communities, and physical therapists are beginning to integrate the Wii into their every day routines. Bring a
friend or two and give it a try! No registration required -- just drop in!

SORTING THROUGH SOCIAL SECURITY

The oldest baby boomers turned 62 in 2008. Over the next 18 years, every boomer turning 62 will need to decide whether or not to take early Social Security benefits. There are
many factors that contribute to the conclusion of when to file for benefits: employment, marital status, health, current income levels, etc. How does Social Security fit within the overall
retirement plan of the recipient? How are benefits calculated? How important is the annual statement that is mailed by the Social Security Administration each year?

Colonel Lew Irwin, a Peters Township resident who commands the 301st Regional Support Group, headquartered in Butler, PA, will describe the specific challenges of "nation building" in Afghanistan,
as well as the problems that have characterized the efforts of the various United States agencies working there.
During his 23 years of service in the United States Army, Colonel Irwin has served in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Bosnia, Panama, Germany, Afghanistan and a variety of seaside locations.
In his civilian career, he is a professor of public policy and government at Duquesne University. An honorarium for this speaker was generously provided by a grant from the McMurray

"Tomatoes, Basil and Garlic" will be released in February, 2010, so Doug will be bringing copies for a book sale and signing after the program.

Interested in learning to identify wild mushrooms? In the introductory March 23 meeting, potential members will learn about the work and activities of the Mushroom Club. A slide show presenting the relationship between tree
varieties and specific mushroom species will be presented, including a special focus on Morels (a spring mushroom) and specific spring mushrooms to avoid. Since members of the Mushroom Club are invited to periodic walks to
seek out mushrooms, a discussion of what to bring and how to dress for walks will also be presented. Participants are invited to attend one meeting at no cost, after which, if they are interested in joining, they must submit

TAKE A TRIP ON THE GREAT ALLEGHENY PASSAGE

Husband and wife team Mary Shaw and Roy Weil will give practical advice on planning a traffic-free bike trip between Pittsburgh and Washington on the Great Allegheny Passage and the
C & O Towpath. Participants will learn how to select an itinerary, whether to go with an organized trip or travel independently, options for transportations to the trailheads, choosing
between camping and indoor lodging, equipment selection and preparation, and costs of trip. They will also discuss physical demands of the trip, how to prepare, and what resources are available
along the way.
Mary Shaw is the Alan J. Perlis Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, and Roy Weil is a Civil Engineer for Baker Corporation. They have both won awards from Venture
Outdoors and REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.) for their work promoting outdoor recreation. They currently serve as donor advisors of the Trail Volunteer Fund at The Pittsburgh
Foundation, which makes grants to provide tools and materials for volunteer projects on the bike trail. Their book Linking Up: Planning Your Traffic-Free Bike Trip Between
Pittsburgh, PA and Washington D.C. Via the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Towpath will be available for sale after the program. Proceeds benefit the Great Allegheny Passage.

Mexico is one of the United States' top trading partners and is a powerful economic force in Latin America. The end of single party rule and steady economic growth has brought new
freedoms and opportunities, but the recent rise in power of domestic drug cartels has created an atmosphere of insecurity. This, coupled with a difficult recovery from the recent global
economic downturn, brings about a number of challenges regarding Mexico's economic future. Dr. Machuca will discuss Mexico’s response to its current domestic and foreign policy challenges
in the context of its relationship with the U.S.
Dr. Machuca's public service includes serving as Political Adviser to the Governor of the State of Mexico and Honorary Representative of the State of Mexico in Europe and the United Kingdom.
He served as an independent adviser to the Secretary of Economic Development of the Government of the State of Mexico, the European Union, and several Mexican political parties. He is currently
the President of the Regional Advisory Council for the National Immigration Institute in the State of Mexico. He holds a Post-Doctorate in Economic Integration from the European University
Institute in Florence, Italy, a Doctorate in Political Economics and a Masters in Development Studies from Cambridge University in Cambridge, England. An honorarium for this speaker was

This class covers creating an excel spreadsheet, printing a range, customization, working with rows and columns, and data validation. Basic mouse and keyboarding skills are

HOMEBOUND DELIVERY
The Peters Township Public Library offers a homebound delivery service.
Library materials are selected, picked up and delivered to Peters Township residents,
regardless of age, who are unable to come to the Library because of a temporary or permanent
physical, visual, or other limitation.
To apply, either complete a
Homebound Delivery Reader Information Form and return it to the Library or contact
Mrs. Lee at Library at (724) 941-9430 ext. 321.
Materials available for circulation include books, large print books, audio books, videos,
DVD's, CD's, and magazines. Items are delivered by a Library volunteer every three weeks.
Requests for renewals may be granted if there are no holds on the item, with the exception of
videos and DVD's, which cannot be renewed.
Volunteers needed!
Homebound delivery is a volunteer-driven service. If you are interested in meeting and helping
others, and are able and willing to deliver items to meet a real, growing need of those in your
community, please call (724) 941-9430 ext. 321.
ONLINE BOOK CLUBS
The Library is delighted to offer several Online Book Clubs. Join one
(or more) of the Online Book Clubs, and every weekday morning we'll email you
a portion of a book that takes about five minutes to read. By the time Friday
arrives, you'll have read the first two or three chapters of a book. If you
like what you've read, and want to read more, simply come to the Library and
check out the book to finish it. A new book begins each Monday. Choose from
the Non-Fiction Book Club (a mixture of fiction and nonfiction), the Fiction
Book Club, the Romance Book Club, the Good News Book Club (a combination of
religious and inspirational fiction and nonfiction), and the Teen Book Club.
Join one or join them all! To enroll, click on the "Online Book Club"
icon on any page within the Library's website, and follow the instructions.
Membership is free and requires only the submission of an e-mail address. This
information is kept confidential and used only for e-mailing book selections.
